A Georgina landlord pleaded guilty to a total of 16 fire code violation charges Tuesday.

The corporation and a director of a commercial property in Keswick each pleaded guilty to eight violations in Newmarket court.

“These charges should indicate the importance of public safety to landlords and that they have a duty to provide safe accommodation,” Georgina Fire Chief Steve Richardson said.

The charges stemmed from an inspection of the premises in June, which uncovered several serious violations, Richardson added.

They included damaged fire separations, inoperable smoke alarms, failing to implement a fire safety plan, inoperable fire rated doors and a building fire alarm system in need of repair.

Individuals convicted of fire code violations can receive fines of up to $50,000 or jail time, while corporations can receive fines up to $100,000 or jail time.
